Names In The News - June 2009

Hendrik van Brenk was appointed chief environmental, health and safety (EHS) officer for Skanska USA in Atlanta.

Van Brenk, a 25-year health and safety veteran, will oversee all of Skanska’s U.S. EHS professionals, as well as serve as the EHS liaison to Skanska AB. He will work to improve the company’s efforts at establishing an injury-free workplace and supporting sustainable construction practices, and then sharing these best practices globally.

Van Brenk joined Skanska AB in 2006 and moved to Skanska USA Building in 2007 as senior vice president, EHS. Prior to becoming a member of the Skanska team, van Brenk served as a health and safety consultant, conducting a review of Skanska’s safety systems and processes as well as administering pilot safety studies for the Skanska Sweden, Poland, Czech and Koch units.

In Durham, N.C., Skanska USA Building promoted Steve Stouthamer to area general manager for the Carolinas and Virginia areas. Stouthamer joined Skanska in 2004. He’s a graduate of Clemson University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in building science and construction management.

Also in Durham, the company hired Kelly Yates Sokolowski as marketing manager. She will oversee marketing efforts in the Carolinas and Virginia. Sokolowski previously performed similar work for Hunter Roberts Construction Group’s southeast division.


SchenkelShultz Architecture of Orlando promoted Charles L. Goodman to partner. Goodman, who has been with SchenkelShultz for 20 years, formerly served as principal and leads the firm’s justice design group in Florida and the Southeast.

The firm also promoted Michelle M. Chandler to director of business development. Chandler, who formerly served as assistant director of business development, joined SchenkelShultz in 2002 and is responsible for securing higher education projects.

In Tampa, the firm promoted Beth A. Tillman to lead business development. She formerly served as marketing coordinator at the firm’s Fort Myers, Fla., office.


James A. Moreno was named senior vice president and director of the South region for San Francisco-based infrastructure consulting firm T.Y. Lin International. Based in Tampa, Moreno will be responsible for directing the business activities for the firm’s South region, which includes Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

Moreno has more than 35 years of industry experience. He previously worked for Parsons Brinkerhoff.


Michael W. Craig will lead the Southeast structures operations for WSP Sells in Raleigh, N.C. In this new position, Craig will manage all bridge design and inspection operations for the firm’s operations in the Southeast. He will work out of the firm’s Cary and Mooresville, N.C., offices.

Craig has more than 12 years of experience in structural engineering with a focus on bridge inspection and bridge design services for the North Carolina Dept. of Transportation.

WSP Sells specializes in providing bridge design and inspection, transportation engineering, development infrastructure, land surveying, photogrammetric mapping and GIS.


Kyle Abney was appointed president of the South Florida chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council in Lake Worth, Fla.

Prior to this appointment, Abney served as vice president of the organization and served in a number of other leadership positions. He is a LEED-accredited professional, and is a state-licensed general contractor and the principal of Abney + Abney Green Solutions, a commercial and residential green building consulting firm.


Christopher S. Park joined the Jacksonville, Fla., office of Batson-Cook Co. as vice president of business development. He has 26 years of industry and construction experience.


Joe Dimel was named national business developer for Southern Industrial Constructors and Southern Crane, full-service industrial contractors in Raleigh, N.C. He will manage existing customer relationships and identify new national business opportunities, particularly those within the energy, automotive, paper and pharmaceutical industries.

Before joining Southern Industrial, Dimel worked in a similar capacity for Atlas Industrial Contractors in Columbus, Ohio.


Rod Creach has joined Barton Malow as health facilities group vice president in the Orlando office. He will initially focus on Florida projects, ultimately overseeing work throughout the region. He has 25 years of experience with health-care and research construction.


Beth Harris has joined construction consulting firm McDonough Bolyard Peck in Atlanta as regional business development and marketing manager. A graduate of East Carolina University, Harris has 14 years experience in the A/E/C industry. She previously served as director of business development for a large construction engineering firm.


Jeffery A. Fuller was appointed vice president of retail development at Mainstream Construction Group in Altamonte Springs, Fla. Fuller has 29 years of industry experience. He previously served as pre-construction manager for Hudson Construction Co. in St. Augustine, Fla.


Mary Tappouni, president of Breaking Ground Contracting Co. in Jacksonville, Fla., was named the “2009 Small Business Person of the Year” for the State of Florida by the U.S. Small Business Administration.


Tom Collins has joined Bayview Construction of Stuart, Fla., as a superintendent. Collins has 35 years of construction experience. He previously served as superintendent for Hawkins Construction, and earlier as superintendent for Creative Contractors.


B & I Contractors of Fort Myers, Fla., created a new department for Mark Morrison, who was appointed fire protection manager. Morrison comes to B & I after holding executive positions with AMC Fire Protection, MEG and RJ Vann.

B&I Contractors is a commercial mechanical electrical and plumbing contractor.


Ted C. Gadoury has joined J.L. Wallace of Fort Myers, Fla., as a superintendent. He is responsible for overseeing all construction-related activities, including OSHA safety requirements and compliance.

Gadoury has more than 35 years of construction experience and has worked as a superintendent for almost 25 years.
