Gary Glenewinkel has joined Pavarini Construction Co. of Miami Lakes as president and chief operating officer. He will assume the responsibilities of the day-to-day operations of the company, which was previously managed by former chairman Gene McGovern, who will be pursuing other opportunities in the South Florida region.

Glenewinkel has more than 27 years of construction industry experience, including 18 years in Florida. Prior to joining Pavarini, he was executive vice president and COO for Centex Rooney Construction Co.


Peter J. Verna Jr., president of Verna Engineering, Charlotte, received the "Titan of the Industry" award from the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute at the organization's 50th anniversary convention, held recently in Atlanta. Verna, a former PCI Institute president, was honored for his industry contributions during his 54-year career as a structural engineer and general contractor.

Verna is recognized as one of the South's foremost structural engineers. His status is attributed to his notable technical design procedures that have been accepted as standard building codes by the American Concrete Institute since the early 1960s. Verna's earliest achievement, in 1953, was the development of a semi-lightweight concrete mix that is now in use throughout the world. He has also designed, produced and erected more than 40 million sq. ft. of structures.


ABC of Georgia recently elected its new officers for 2005. They include: chairman of the board - Scott Unger, Constructware; immediate past chairman - Steve Smilie, Bovis Lend Lease; chairman-elect - Bill Davis, Garrard Construction Group; vice chairman - Mike Doyle, Dudley Barrett Construction Co.; and treasurer - John Beilsmith, Navigator CPA Group.

Also, the following were named as 2004-2005 directors: Jeff George, Hardin Construction Co.; Kevin Grass, Winter Construction; Les Juneau, Juneau Construction Co.; Trey Sanders, Brasfield & Gorrie; and John White, Skanska USA Building.

The following were named as 2005-2006 directors: Barry Compton, H.J. Russell & Co.; Brett Fortune, Fortune-Johnson General Contractors; Mike Hardin, Harcon; Tom Schwarzer, Berkel & Co. Contractors; and Jon Tuggle, RMC Allied Materials.


The Underground Utility Contractors of Florida recently installed its officers and directors for 2004-2005. Officers for the year include: president - Joe Cook, Pensacola Concrete Co.; president-elect - Ryan Schmitt, A.J. Johns Inc.; vice president - Mike Woodall, John Woody Inc.; vice president - Kirk Richmond, Armadillo Underground; vice president, convention - Jeff Blake, Arrow Directional Boring Inc.; treasurer - Bill Lee, Utility Service Co.; secretary - Tom Opfer, East Coast Underground; and past president - Cheryl Yoder, Johnson-Davis Inc.

UUCF also recently presented its 2004 "Performance Awards." Awards and their recipients included: "Mitch Ellington Award" - Kevin J. Fulcher of Larkin Contracting Inc.; "Gary D. Sawyer Award" - Glen Tupler of Austin Tupler Trucking; and the "Andrew J. Mayts Award" - Chris Stewart of Ellis K. Phelps & Co.

The Mitch Ellington and Gary D. Sawyer awards are presented annually to individuals who have made significant contributions to the industry or the association. The Andrew J. Mayts Award is presented annually to a UUCF board member who made significant contributions to the industry or association.


Jay Jaroun has been promoted to vice president for American Pan & Engineering Co., a concrete contractor based in Palmetto, Ga. Jaroun will oversee all of the field operations for the company.


R. Kirk Randolph has been named vice president of APAC's Major Projects Group in Atlanta. Randolph was previously vice president, operations support.

Randolph joined APAC in 1979 as a summer laborer. Following his college graduation, he worked as an engineer with APAC and was then promoted to positions as estimator, division vice president, division president and regional vice president.


Mel Morris, formerly president and CEO of Bostic Construction of Greensboro, N.C., recently announced his retirement. Presidential responsibilities will be assumed by Jeff Bostic, co-founder and owner of Bostic Construction and Bostic Development. Bostic Construction is a multifamily and campus housing construction and development company.


John R. Wehle, a principal with MWH Americas and formerly assistant executive director at the St. Johns River Water Management District, was recently designated as a Fellow by the American Water Resources Association. Wehle has served as AWRA national president and locally has served as treasurer, vice president and president.


Harvard Jolly, an architecture firm in Orlando, recently named John Burk as senior project manager and Isaac West to the position of technical support.

In the firm's Fort Lauderdale office, Dominique Denis was named to the position of project manager and Jillian Schultz will provide technical support.

In Tampa, Harvard Jolly recently hired Eric Rang and James McDevitt to technical support positions.


Frank Zollo was named vice president of business development for Foundation Contractors Inc. of Fort Lauderdale. He joined FCI's Atlanta office in 2001 as a project manager.


Clancy & Theys Construction Co. recently announced the addition of William Andersen, Kevin Taylor and Tom Clancy to its Orlando office. Andersen joins the company as a project manager, while Taylor has been hired as an assistant project manager.

Clancy, grandson of one of the company's founders, E.I. Clancy, joins the Orlando office as an estimator.


Jacquelyn Jordan Hall has been promoted to systems training manager at ACI Construction Services in Tampa. Previously an executive assistant, Hall is now responsible for ISO procedures, human resources evaluations, procedural training and compliance.


Garcia Brenner Stromberg, an architecture firm based in Boca Raton, recently announced several appointments. Roger L. Grave de Peralta and Jacinto E. Pichardo were named associates in the firm's Boca Raton office.

Also, William Tessier has joined the Stuart office as an associate. Also in Stuart, Salma S. Manuel and Amber Lynn Bard will be serving as intern architects.


Mark L. Mongeau of Ardaman & Associates, Orlando, was named president of the Florida Engineering Society, a statewide engineering association that represents over 4000 professional engineers.


Greg McFadden has joined Structural Preservation Systems of Fort Lauderdale as a project manager. McFadden most recently worked as a senior project manager for Site Concrete.


AnhDan Quang-Le, Ph.D., has joined Ellis & Associates of Jacksonville as staff engineer II. Quang-Le will be responsible for providing project management, professional engineering judgments and making preliminary selections and adaptations of engineering alternatives. He also will direct a crew of assistant staff engineers, drafters, drillers and technicians in the firm's geotechnical department.


Drew Lamberson was promoted to project manager for Atlanta-based Hardin Construction Co., and Matt Waddell was promoted to senior project manager.

In Hardin's Orlando office, the company announced the following promotions: Jason Boone to area superintendent, Drew Emerson and Scott Lyons to senior project manager, Paul Mayfield to general superintendent and Donny Smith to senior estimator.


Marisa Wenner has joined MGE Architects of Coral Gables, Fla., as an interior designer. She has more than six years of experience in interior design, space planning, graphics and project coordination. She was formerly an associate with Perkins & Will in Miami.


Seka Roberts has joined the interiors group of Cannon Design's Jacksonville office. She is currently assigned to the Ave Maria University project, the first all-new Catholic university to be established in the United States in half a century, located near Immokalee, Fla.


Sofia Arguimbau has joined Gallo Architects & Development Consultants of Deerfield Beach, Fla., as a project designer. Arguimbau is responsible for overall project coordination for many of the firm's retail, educational and healthcare clients.


C. Ben Nevins has been named president of Brice Building Co., in Birmingham, Ala. Nevins, a 31-year veteran of the company, will also retain his current title of chief operating officer. The company has offices in Orlando and Boynton Beach, Fla., and works throughout the Southeast.


The ADP Group, an architectural, interior design and planning firm based in Sarasota, Fla., recently announced the following promotions: Steve Panzarino to vice president, architecture; Sarah Colandro to vice president-interior design; and James Dickason and Robert Erman to senior associate.


Tim R. Howard has joined The Henning Group of Naples, Fla., as director of business development. Howard will be managing all marketing and new business development functions, and will also serve as the primary liaison to the South and Central Florida building and industry communities.


Roy Silberstein has been named an associate and manager of a new Orlando office of Leggette, Brashears & Graham Inc., a groundwater and environmental engineering services firm with offices nationwide.


Founders Patti Morgan, Dwight Morgan and Paul Bartos recently announced their new businesses, Morgan & Bartos Constructors and Morgan & Bartos Builders, Atlanta. All three principals previously worked at major national construction and commercial real estate firms. They have more than 75 years experience in healthcare, office, retail and multi-family and residential construction projects throughout the Southeast.

Morgan & Bartos Constructors is a private, woman-owned firm and will provide general contracting, construction management and project management services. Its president, Patti Morgan, has more than 20 years experience in the construction business.

Morgan & Bartos Builders is a private, general contracting, construction management and project management services firm managed by Dwight Morgan and Paul Bartos, who each have more than 25 years of experience with major national construction firms. Morgan previously worked as the Georgia division president for Skanska USA Building, formerly Beers Construction, before co-founding Morgan & Bartos. Bartos has more than 27 years of experience in the construction industry and previously worked as an executive vice president at Skanska USA Building, where he had worked since 1995.
